We are engineers first
Load balancers, Apache logs, PHP, server hardening. The unglamorous layer most design shops outsource is the layer we started in.
Knoxville · since 2010
Laymance Technologies is a web design, development, and hosting company in Knoxville, Tennessee. The name is the founder's name, which is a useful constraint — it means the work has someone's name attached to it.
Laymance Technologies opened in 2010 as a development and server shop rather than a design studio, and that order still shows. Before it was a place that built websites it was a place that kept them running — Apache configuration, load balancing, backups, the parts of the job that only become visible when they fail.
That is 16 years of the same person answering the phone, which in an industry where agencies fold and developers vanish is most of the value on offer.
Design came later, because clients kept needing both and did not want to coordinate two vendors. That combination is still the whole pitch: one shop that designs it, builds it, hosts it, and picks up the phone.
Most clients are small and mid-sized businesses in and around Knoxville — contractors, tourism operators, manufacturers, and professional services. Alongside them are a few that are neither small nor local:
Both of those last two began in 2010, the year this company opened, and ran eight and fourteen years. Winning a client is not the hard part of this business. Still being their developer a decade later is.
You can go look at all of it. That is deliberate — we would rather be judged on public work than on a testimonial page.
Fixed scope and fixed price before anything is built. If we think you are about to spend money on the wrong thing, we say so, even when the wrong thing is the more expensive thing. Patching a site that should be replaced is billable and we would rather not.
If something breaks, you call one number and reach the person who wrote the code. There is no ticket queue in between.
Why clients pick us
Load balancers, Apache logs, PHP, server hardening. The unglamorous layer most design shops outsource is the layer we started in.
Design, code, hosting, email, and maintenance are all in-house. There is no vendor to blame and no one to transfer you to.
Sites left half-finished by a previous developer are a routine job here, not an exception we would rather avoid.
A small shop can do this and a large agency structurally cannot. It is the thing clients mention most.
